There’s something magical about fall in California. The weather starts to cool down, the mornings feel a little crisper, and depending on where you live, those beautiful green trees start putting on their colorful autumn show. 🍁

But while we see a pretty carpet of fall leaves, your dog may see something completely different:

A giant outdoor sniffing, rolling, and snack-filled playground! 😂🐾

Before you let your pup dive headfirst into the leaves, here are a few things every pet parent should know.

🍂 Leaves Make Great Sniffing Material… But Watch the Snacking

Dogs explore the world with their noses and mouths, so it’s completely normal for your pup to investigate fallen leaves.

A leaf or two usually isn’t cause for panic, but eating large amounts of leaves can cause stomach problems or even create a blockage, particularly in puppies and smaller dogs. Some leaves and plants can also be toxic to dogs.

And don’t forget about what’s hiding underneath those leaves. Acorns, sticks, mushrooms, fertilizers, pesticides, and other yard debris can create additional hazards.

So let your dog enjoy the smells of fall—but keep an eye on what they’re putting in their mouth! 👀

🐕 Leaves + Wet Weather = Dirty Dog

Here’s another thing California pet parents know well: when leaves get wet, they can turn into a giant mud-and-dirt magnet.

Your dog runs through the leaves.

Then through the grass.

Then across the dirt.

Then straight into the house.

Sound familiar? 😂

Leaves, dirt, moisture, and outdoor debris can collect on your dog’s paws, legs, belly, and coat. A little fall adventure can quickly turn into a “Why is my dog suddenly wearing half the backyard?” situation.

🐾 Don’t Forget the Paws

Fall is a great time to pay a little extra attention to your dog’s paws after walks and outdoor play.

Check between the toes for:

  • 🍂 Leaves and plant debris

  • 🌿 Grass or foxtails

  • 🌰 Small nuts or acorns

  • 🪵 Tiny sticks or other debris

  • 🐾 Dirt and mud

California pet parents should be especially mindful of foxtails, which can become dry and hazardous during much of the year.

🍁 A Clean Dog Is a Happy Fall Dog!

You don’t have to keep your pup away from the leaves. Let them sniff, explore, play, and enjoy the cooler weather!

Just remember to supervise them, discourage excessive leaf-eating, and give them a good check—or a good bath—after those messy outdoor adventures.

Because honestly, what’s better than a happy dog?

A happy, clean, fresh-smelling dog who isn’t bringing an entire pile of California’s autumn leaves into your house. 😂🐶🍂

🛁 Time for a Fall Freshen-Up?

If your pup has been spending more time outside enjoying the changing season, fall is a perfect time for a good bath and cleanup.

So go ahead…

Let them sniff the leaves.
Let them explore.
Let them have their fall fun.

Just maybe don’t let them eat the entire pile. 😉
