It’s important to keep to using positive reinforcement when training your dog.

What is positive reinforcement? It’s when you give a reward in exchange for wanted behavior. Dogs love praise, and more importantly, food. Here are a few basic things to keep in mind:

  1. Use proper timing when giving rewards

It’s important that you give the reward immediately after, otherwise you’re pet might not associate the reward with the right action. For example, if you ask your dog to be quiet but reward him after he’s started barking again, he’ll think he’s being rewarded for barking.

2. Keep your commands short

Your dog is not going to understand complete sentences. Which is why it is important to keep commands short and to the point. Don’t use more than one or two words for a command.

3. Be Consistent With Commands

Make sure that everyone uses the same word or phrase for a command. If you don’t, your pet may get confused. It’s also important to always reward the behavior you want. Don’t ever reward the opposite behavior.
